Customization generally costs a little more, but you can find some models that work for moderate mattress budgets. All the companies included in this list have financing available.
Here’s a look at seven customizable mattress companies, what their ordering process is, and some ideas about how to choose.

When we say “standard sizes” in this article, we mean standard for that company.
Companies on this list focus on custom-made mattresses and make mattresses in standardized, but unusual, sizes.
“Standard sizes” for custom mattress makers aren’t just typical queen and king measurements. So, it’s worth checking what they have in stock that you can buy “off the shelf” as is.

Tochta custom mattresses
Tochta has been in business for 35 years. The California-based company began making RV mattresses, but they now make all sizes. This includes special standard sizes, like a 72 x 80 inch mattress called “short king.”
There are three basic all-foam Tochta models:

- Utopia
All models are available in standard mattress sizes or customizable sizes.
Choose custom dimensions from 4–10 inches thick, 20–88 inches wide, and 40–100 inches long, depending on which model you want.

You build your mattress online, choosing basic dimensions: width, length, and thickness. Tochta makes mattresses to any thickness from 4 to 10 inches (in full-inch increments). They recommend 9–10 inches for optimal support and comfort.
If you need special cuts, angles, or notches in your mattress, you fill out a diagram according to instructions. Tochta will help you do this via phone, if necessary.

Tochta materials
All three models use high-density foam for support. These are CertiPUR-US certified. The two more expensive models add cooling dual phase change foam.
How Tochta mattresses are delivered
Shipping is free in the contiguous United States. For other states or territories, there’s an additional charge. Orders usually ship within 2–5 business days, and delivery is typically 4–5 days after that.
Mattresses are compressed and rolled prior to shipping.

Mattresses have a 100-night sleep trial. To return a mattress, you first need to contact Tochta to get a return authorization.
The mattress must be in its original condition (aside from the mattress cover). You have to pack it and pay for the return shipping.

Yankee Mattress Factory and Custom Mattress Makers
The Yankee Mattress Factory in Massachusetts handcrafts mattresses that it sells in local stores and online via Custom Mattress Makers. The company has been in business since 2001.
All Yankee mattresses have individually pocketed coils designed for support and extra edge support.
Their custom mattresses through Custom Mattress Makers are sold online only. Custom Mattress Makers has five models available, ranging in widths from 30 to 76 inches and lengths from 55 to 84 inches:
- Cocoa Soft Latex
- Cocoa Firm Latex

- Daytona Firm
- Cape 6-Inch Hybrid
The website notes that there may be a 1-inch variance in each direction in the custom sizes because of the coil configuration. You can choose whether you prefer the variance to be slightly smaller or larger than the size you ordered.
The company advises that you rotate the mattress from head to toe every 1–2 months.

The Custom Mattress Makers website lists both standard and less common mattress sizes, plus European sizes. So, your specific measurements may be on this list. If not, select the model you want and add your width and length to calculate the price.

Yankee Mattress Factory materials
Yankee uses gel-infused padding, natural latex, and woven silica rayon for a fire barrier. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified, and all materials are U.S. made.
How Yankee Mattress Factory mattresses are delivered
UPS ground shipping is free when bought through Custom Mattress Makers.
The mattresses are rolled, compressed, and vacuum sealed. Manufacturing time on all sizes is 2–3 weeks.

There’s a 100-night sleep trial and a full refund if you’re not happy with your mattress.
To return a mattress, you need to cut an 18-inch piece out of the mattress cover, cut off the law tag labels, and send these back to Yankee Mattress Factory in a medium flat-rate USPS mailer. Yankee Mattress will reimburse the flat rate postage. You are responsible for disposing of the mattress.

Out of the reviews on their website, 91 percent give the mattresses 5 stars. One complaint was that the edge support wasn’t good enough.
Yankee Mattress Factory and Custom Mattress Makers are not listed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and there are no complaints listed.
Mattress Insider and Create-A-Mattress
Mattress Insider is a Colorado-based company that builds mattresses to order in both standard and special sizes. This includes a giant family bed size designed for co-sleeping. The brand has been in business since 2008 and has a showroom in Littleton, Colorado.
Mattress Insider recently bought another local company, Create-A-Mattress, and inquiries on the Create-A-Mattress website are referred to Mattress Insider staff.
The company states they can “make any size, any shape” and deliver it anywhere in the United States or Canada, plus some overseas addresses, in 15 days or less. Standard-sizes can be delivered same or next day.
The company also offers bedding to fit its custom mattresses.
Ordering from Mattress Insider
The website advises how to measure for your mattress. They will give you a quote over the phone, even for an odd-shaped mattress. However, you’ll need to provide them with a template or schematic to construct an odd-shaped mattress.
The company states that their custom mattresses may deviate up to 1.5 inches, but it’s generally not a problem.

Mattress Insider materials
You can select your mattress layers from memory foam (the most popular), latex, innerspring, gel foam, and others.
Mattress cover materials are made from one of three fabrics: certified organic cotton, Cool-Max by Dupont, or bamboo rayon.
The company only uses materials made in the United States, including:

Custom sizes are not returnable or refundable after production has started. However, Mattress Insider offers many odd sizes as standard.
For their standard-size mattresses, Mattress Insider has a 121-night no-risk sleep trial with two options.
If you’re not satisfied with your mattress within 30 days, you can donate it locally and get a full refund. After 30 days, you can get a full refund, but you are responsible for paying shipping costs and packaging the return.
If you order the wrong standard size, there’s a $49 restocking fee.

Customer reviews on the company’s website average 4.79 out of 5 stars. Most of the reviews praise the quality, comfort, and customer service. A couple of the complaints were about delivery problems.

SelectaBed UltraBed
SelectaBed is a California-based company that’s been in business since 2001. It’s a subsidiary of Relief-Mart, a company that sells health products online.
SelectaBed makes Ultrabed brand mattresses: oversized and odd-shaped beds using its variety of mattress materials. Each Ultrabed mattress is made to order.
They offer many types of mattresses: air, memory foam, latex foam, or hybrid with coil support.
SelectaBed partners with other specialty mattress makers and also sells bedding and bed bases.
The website includes comparisons of SelectaBed mattresses to other popular brands like Tempur-Pedic and Serta.

The website can be confusing, but it basically works like a catalog, showing the many types and models. You can order by the brand name or the mattress material.
Except for Ultrabed, the sizes are standard, but the layers and materials are customizable.
